To celebrate 150 years since the arrival of the Indian community in South Africa, sociologist, author, social commentator and Eastern Mosaic presenter, Ashwin Desai, will be in conversation with historian Uma Dhupelia – Mesthrie, about the recently updated special commemorative edition of his book Inside Indian Indenture: A South Africa story, 1860 – 1914 (HSRC Press). Eloquent, informative and engaging, Inside Indian Indenture is a timely and monumental book that makes a significant contribution to our understanding of South African Indian historiography. |

 Growing up in the new South Africa – what are some of the challenges facing children and adolescents in post-apartheid Cape Town? Listen to the views of authors Jeremy Seekings & Sharlene Swartz as they discuss some of the everyday social realties for young people growing up in post-apartheid South Africa. Issues ranging from schooling, violence, sexuality, teenage fathers, HIV/AIDS, family life, culture, poverty, race, and class amongst others, will be discussed as outlined in the books Growing up in the new South Africa and Teenage Tata (HSRC Press). Professor Crain Soudien, UCT Deputy Vice-Chancellor will facilitate the discussion. |

Join in the launch discussion and listen to the views of volume co-editor Sakhela Buhlungu, Johann Maree, Connie September and Tony Ehrenreich. |

South Africa in 2010: Development or Decline?
Join in the debate and discussion about the current state of government and politics in South Africa, and the implications for development and growth. Key issues to be discussed include creating a democratic developmental state, service delivery, growing inequality, high poverty, unemployment and mal-governance, amongst other issues. The potentials and challenges for constructing a democratic developmental state in South Africa will also be explored. Panellists include: Achille Mbembe (Wits Press), Omano Edigheji (HSRC Press) and Muff Andersson (UNISA Press). Ari Sitas of UCT will chair the discussion. |
